Google Finally Goes Conventional
In the world of technology, Microsoft’s the one known to invest large chunks of money on advertising and promoting its services in traditional medium like commercials and print ads. As far as Google is concerned, the name in itself is already a promotion. Hence, the company rarely saw the need to promote its services via traditional media.
However, things took a dramatic turn during the eventful Super Bowl last night. Yes, The Saints won but that is only one part of it. It all began on twitter. Specifically, Google’s CEO’s (Eric Schmidt) twitter account.
Mr. Schmidt recently suggested that there was something to look out for during the live telecast of Superbowl, tweeting loudly ‘Can’t wait to watch the Superbowl tomorrow. Be sure to watch the ads in the 3rd quarter (someone said “Hell has indeed frozen over.”
After seeing the tweet, obviously, those in the industry were high on alert, watching out for the commercial slot during the 3rd quarter of the game. There was rife speculation about what he meant before that.
Many disagreed that Google was out to put an advertisement during Super Bowl because it wasn’t their style to do so. Some others predicted that it would be an ad for the newly launched Android, Nexus One. Others merely thought that hell would freeze over before Google would run a conventional commercial for their services.
Well, turns out – hell froze over and it WAS a rather simple (by Google’s standard) commercial slotted into the 3rd quarter space. The way they approached the ad was somewhat simple but with lots of meaning behind it. It certainly stood out amidst the beer ads, cars and bikes advertisements. The advertisement is a love story told through Google search.
If you don’t pay attention, you might even miss the whole point. It is about a man making searches using Google search engine looking to study in Paris, meeting a girl there, then working on a long distance relationship, then finding a job in Paris, on to marrying the French woman and then the finale…the man searched for ‘how to assemble a crib’.
