  • Cisco compacts Catalyst switches

Posted on January 17, 2011 by versatek

Network World - Cisco this week is rolling out two lines of Catalyst Ethernet switches in compact form factors intended for deployment in work-groups closer to users than the wiring closets.

The Catalyst 3560-C and 2960-C Compact Series (C-Series) switches are designed to extend connectivity to IT deployments outside of the wiring closet -- customer check-outs, kiosks, warehouses, conference rooms, classrooms, hotel rooms, cruise ship cabins, gaming floors and other space- and wiring-constrained networking environments.

    IN DEPTH: Gigabit choke points

Cisco says this market is about $1 billion and is being under served by low-end, commodity switches. The C-series are "enterprise-class," and carry all the features of the higher-end Catalyst 3560 and 2960 switches, but in a compact form factor, says Rob Soderbery, senior vice president and general manager, Ethernet Switching Technology Group at Cisco.

So the C-series will compete with both low-end commodity switches and enterprise-class compact switches from Cisco's traditional competitors in the enterprise and SMB switch market -- HP, Adtran, Netgear, D-Link, etc.

The switches are comprised of five models. They sport eight to 12 Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports and two Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. They also include hardware acceleration for IPv6, IP multicast and access control lists.

The switches feature what Cisco calls Power over Ethernet (PoE) pass-through, a capability that allows the products to draw 30 watts/port of power from PoE switches deeper in the network -- like in the wiring closets -- and not require dedicated power outlets or power supplies. The switches are also designed to reduce cabling costs by eliminating the need for individual cable drops from the wiring closet to far-flung network endpoints.

The switches can be deployed up to 100 meters away from the wiring closet, Cisco says. They are fanless, and can be placed on or mounted underneath desktops and countertops or on a wall.

COMPANY PROFILE: Cisco eschews cloud services -- for now

For security, the switches support Cisco's TrustSec technology, which determines, through policies, the role of users and devices in the network before granting access to resources. The C-Series switches are also PCI compliant, Cisco says, for regulatory compliance of payment transactions.

The switches encrypt all packets between the switch and the end device, and malicious users can be blocked from eavesdropping on the conversation between two endpoints, Cisco says. The switches also come with an optional security lock and cable guard to prevent theft of the switch and unauthorized access to the cables. The C-Series switches also feature tools for simplified configuration and management, and QoS implementation for IP telephony and video. The switches can be remotely managed along with the switches in the wiring closet, Cisco says.

They also support Cisco's EnergyWise software for monitoring and managing energy consumption of the devices connected to the switch. EnergyWise turns off or powers down devices when they are not needed.

Pricing for the C-series ranges from $745 to $1,995. They will be available in March.

  • Extended Ethernet Weather Stations at California Wineries

Posted on October 1, 2010 by versatek

Several large California Wineries are using the Versa Technologies VX-VEB160r2 http://www.versatek.com/products/ethernet_extender.htm Ethernet Extender to provide up to the minute weather conditions on their vast properties. These conditions can often be different at the various locations.

The Ethernet Extenders allow the vinters to monitor the changing weather conditions and add protective coverings for the grapes if need be. Or they can remove protective coverings and allow the grapes to receive unlimited sun. Many of these locations are many acres from the main barn on the facilities. Furthermore, many of the remote locations are at different altitudes.

Ethernet Extension is becoming more popular in the agricultural sector as weather sensor equipment has become more dependable and less expensive. The remote weather sensors are solar powered with Category 5 or Category 3 wiring sending the data.

  • Gigabit POE Injector aka Gigabit Power Over Ethernet Injector

Posted on August 3, 2009 by versatek

    VX-Pi100Gb

Chino, CA August 3rd, 2009 -- Versa Technology (www.versatek.com), a leading provider of last mile communications including Ethernet Switches, DSLAM's, Ethernet Extenders has release a brand new Gigabit PoE injector. The VX-1000GB is among the very first Gigabit Power over Ethernet injectors to be release in North America this year. The VX-Pi1000GB will allow all wireless access points to reach their full bandwidth potential including the new 802.11N wireless standard.

The VX-Pi1000GB is an IEEE 802.3af spec Power over Ethernet Injector which provides DC 48V over Ethernet cables. The VX-Pi1000GB IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet Injector inserts DC Voltage into Cat.5 cable, allowing the cable between the Injector (VX-Pi1000GB) and Splitter to transfer data and power simultaneously. The maximum distance between the Injector (VX-Pi1000GB) and Splitter is 100 meters. With VX-Pi1000GB being installed, it combines the Ethernet digital data with power over the twisted pair cables as an IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet Injector. And the IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet splitter shall separate the digital data and the power into two outputs.

One problem a lot of companies are having now is the new addition of Wireless N products and the fact that it requires a gigabit connection. Most Power over Ethernet injector’s do not provide Gigabi, including the VX-Pi100 currently sold in the thousands by Versa monthly provides only 100Mb.

Well Versa Technology has heard the demand and we have answered this call with the VX-Pi1000GB.

Unlike most existing Power over Ethernet Injector, the VX-Pi1000GB also provides 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet connection ability, as well as the 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet connection ability.

With IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet devices installed, the system administrator only has to use a single RJ-45 Ethernet cable to carry both power and data to each device. Besides, to connect through VX-Pi1000GB, you could also have benefits which includes cost saving, easy for networking planning and higher reliability. Upon any IEEE 802.3af devices installed, the VX-Pi1000GB or together with splitter can make the connection while migrating or splitting the power and the Ethernet digital packets, such as connecting the VX-Pi1000GB to an IEEE 802.3af compliant devices, AP or IP phone.

    Key Features

    • Complies with IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet, IEEE 802.3/802.3u/802.3ab 10/100/1000Base-T
    • Provides DC 48V power over RJ-45 Ethernet cable to device with Ethernet port
    • LED indicators power input indication
    • Distance up to 100 meters
    • Auto-detect of POE IEEE 802.3af equipment and devices from being damaged by incorrect installation
    • Works with EIA568, category 5, 5e or 6 ,2/4-pair cables for 10Base-T or 100Base-TX & 1000Base-T
    • EMI standards complies with FCC, CE class B
