A network switch:

  • Transfers data packets between the network devices (PDs) on the office network.
  • Adds more ports to an existing LAN so more devices can be connected.

What Are the Different Types of Network Switches?

KVM Switch

KVM stands for “Keyboard, Video, Mouse.” This type of switch connects the keyboard, video, and mouse between multiple computers via a push-button, shortcut key, mouse button, or selector. A KVM can control two computers that are just a few feet apart or hundreds of computers stationed miles from each other.

KVM switches allow remote workers (usually in a home setting) to use only one keyboard, monitor (in some cases multiple monitors), and mouse to control both their personal and work computers. In addition, integrating USB C into a KVM switch allows remote workers to switch between their laptops, mobile devices, and tablets. This is called a hybrid KVM switch.

Besides remote workers, KVM switches are in:

Unmanaged Switch

Smart Switch

The smart switch (also known as an intelligent switch) is a cross between a managed and an unmanaged switch. Smart switches are a type of managed switch. However, they provide a limited number of management options — not the full range of management features found in a managed switch.

Generally, smart switches can configure only a few settings, such as Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) or duplex modes. These devices are usually more affordable and are a good solution for business networks that do not require a full set of configuration options.

What Is Power over Ethernet Technology?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology is a standard that transmits both power and data simultaneously over a single twisted-pair Ethernet cable.

PoE provides power sourcing equipment (PSE) with a direct DC voltage over a standard Ethernet cable to a connected device called a powered device (PD). With PoE, the PSE powers the PD without needing a local electrical source (such as a wall outlet) or without running a separate power cable.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, pronounced “I-triple E”) has created three PoE standards that define four types (or strengths) of PoE.

Type 1: 802.3af (called PoE) has 15.4 watts (W) of power available to support PDs like:

  • Static surveillance cameras.
  • Wireless access points (WAPs).
  • VoIP phones.
  • Biometric access control.
  • 802.11n (WLAN).

Type 2: 802.3af (called PoE+) delivers up to 30W to support PDs like:

  • Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) readers.
  • Video Internet Protocol (IP) phones.
  • Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) IP cameras.
  • Alarm systems.

Type 3: 802.3bt (called PoE++) provides up to 60W and can support PDs like:

  • PTZ IP cameras with heaters.
  • Information kiosks.
  • Access controls.
  • Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.
  • Nurse call.

Type 4:  802.3bt (known as Hi-PoE) has up to 100W of power that supports PDs like:

  • Computers.
  • TVs.
  • Video conferencing.
  • High power wireless.
  • LED lighting and sensors.
  • Facility monitoring controls.
  • Digital signage.
  • POS kiosks.

What Are the Benefits of PoE?

PoE technology has many benefits for a business network, the major ones being:

  • Cost-effectiveness: PoE reduces the costs of powering a network in many ways. Since this technology uses only one Ethernet cable to supply power and transfer data, the wiring cost is cut in half. In addition, PoE is easy to install and does not require the services of an expensive licensed electrician. Last, PoE works for outdoor installation without needing an electrical infrastructure such as outlets.
  • Safety: With PoE, the switch must receive a “handshake” from the powered device before any electricity is delivered. No handshake, no power. Therefore, there is no chance a user can experience shock or damage.
  • Flexibility/Scalability: PoE is plug-and-play. Devices can be placed anywhere because they are not tethered to an electrical outlet. As a result, changes and additions are easy.

Key Features to Consider When Choosing a Network Switch

When choosing a network switch for your business network, it makes sense to consider the following:

1) What is your budget? Managed switches are more expensive than unmanaged or smart switches.

2) Do you need customization? If you have uncomplicated switching needs that do not require customization, an unmanaged switch will fit your needs nicely. Need some management control? Look into a smart switch. However, a managed switch is vital to a complex network that needs extensive management control and prioritization of network traffic.

3) How fast should your network be? Always be sure that the speed configuration of a switch suits your needs. You can choose from Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Ten Gigabit, or even faster.

4) How many ports do you need? Typically, switches have between five and 52 ports. If your LAN has just a few connected devices, a small number will be adequate. Be sure to choose a switch with the appropriate number of ports. And, remember, the more ports on a switch, the higher the cost.

5) Does your switch need to be stackable? Stackable switches allow you to set up multiple switches so you can treat them as one. This is a great option for networks that are expanding rapidly.

Network Switch vs. Hub vs. Router

While the terms “switch,” “hub,” and “router” are often mistakenly used interchangeably, it is important to know these are three different networking devices that have separate functions. Here are the key functions of each:

Network (Ethernet) Switch

  • Connects wired devices to a LAN.
  • Uses multiple ports to communicate between devices in a LAN.
  • Controls access to the LAN.
  • Monitors network usage.

Ethernet Hubs

  • Similar to Ethernet switches.
  • Shares bandwidth equally among ports.
  • Less robust performance than Ethernet switches.

Routers

  • Connects networks to other networks (e.g., connects LANs to WANs).
  • Usually placed at the gateway between networks.
  • Routes (forwards) data packets between networks.
  • Provides WiFi functionality.

Most business networks use a combination of all three networking devices, along with wired and wireless technology.

How Does a Network Switch Benefit a LAN?

Network switches are vital to a business network in many key ways.

1) Network switches increase the number of connected devices on a LAN.

Network switches come with five to 52 ports. Each port supports an additional network device, thus enabling the growth of the network.

2) Wired network connections are faster than WiFi.

A network switch is a wired device, and wired devices are faster than wireless devices. Typically, a network switch provides around 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps). In contrast, the fastest WiFi speed is about 6.9Gbps. However, in practice, rates rarely exceed 1Gbps.

3) Network switches route data traffic intelligently.

Data gets sent to all connected devices in a wireless network, which frequently causes traffic congestion. Network hubs have the same limitation. However, network switches are smart. They can record each device’s MAC address, so most data is sent only to the proper device.

4) Network switches are more reliable than WiFi.

Wireless signals are vulnerable to interference, which makes them erratic. For example, signals must travel through walls and work their way around innumerable objects. Also, since multiple WiFi networks are often in close proximity, they can interfere with each other.

A wired network switch simply has none of these problems. Network switches are reliable, and speeds will remain consistent.

5) Wired networks are more secure than wireless networks.

Security issues plague wireless networks because broadcasting data through the air is an invitation to all sorts of bad hats. In addition, WiFi network passwords are vulnerable to being hacked, giving criminals access to crucial business information and resources.

The network switch removes this type of threat entirely. An attacker can only breach a wired network by gaining physical access to the business premises.
